This one is a coincidence. In the last few days I’ve been fleshing out a character for my SciFi novel. Her first scene sees her doing a tough cross-country trial that includes rock climbing. She is a skilled athlete with a particular ability to climb – although she has genetically enhanced strength, speed and has deliberately halted puberty so she can maintain the perfect body for her chosen sports. So, even though she is in her early twenties she has the body of a child with the strength of an adult.
Then this turns up on FB. It’s a video of Brooke Raboutou, a rock climbing prodigy. Brooke actually has the agility and strength I has imagined for my character. Given that Brooke already displays my imagined skill level I’m going to have to boost the abilities of my character.
On another level, it’s girls like Brooke that encourage me that girls are indeed breaking through the barriers.
There are two videos here. The second is perhaps the more startling because it shows a younger Brooke (age 7) fearlessly free climbing a rock beginning upside down. When I saw this I was impressed that there were no adults yelling for her to get down least she hurt herself.
