Graham Ovenden (2): Persecuting The Models

Persecute: harass, hound, pursue, pester, badger, distress, victimize, bully. It's an odd thing how those who claim to be acting in the best interests of child models end up being the very people who cause the harm. In this blog I have detailed a number of examples. When Hetty Johnston pursued the photographer Bill Henson she paid no attention to the harm it would cause the model. When former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd described a photo as disgusting, the young model Olympia Nelson came out to defend her image. Then there are the highly articulate thoughts of Jessie Mann, daughter [...]

The Child Pornography Debate And The Theology Of The Child

Fact was largely eschewed in favour of emotive supposition, the actual was ignored in favour of the potential and the remotely possible was selectively interpreted as imminently probable. (McCarthy and Moodie, as quoted in Suzanne Ost, Child Pornography and Sexual Grooming) The hysteria around the issue of child sexuality speaks of a deeper cause. When the authorities are having some success at smashing child pornography rings and the incidence of child sexual abuse is actually in decline, the panic over the sexualisation of children is about something more. I am clear that this is all about adult fears projected onto [...]

Defining Child Pornography: The Contradictions

There is no agreement as to what constitutes child pornography. The reality is that various jurisdictions pursue often arbitrary campaigns based on the level of local moral panic. In most cases this amounts to the persecution of innocent parents and legitimate artists. The purpose of this persecution is to satisfy the irrational howls of the mob who desire a scapegoat. If they can't get their hands on a genuine child abuser, they target anyone they don't understand. All of this is a distraction from the real problem. In America there have been several cases where local police and prosecutors have [...]

The Marina Experiment

A reader informed me of The Marina Experiment. I'm glad he did because the publicity around the project raises some important issues around interpretation, as does the experiment itself. The Marina Experiment is self-explanatory, or ought to be. But that's the problem. Despite the director Marina Lutz speaking very clearly and articulately about her reasons for making her documentary, it seems some people are intent on misreading the film, including people who we trust should know better. Marina Lutz, centre The problem lies with film's ability to manipulate, an ability used every day in advertising to try and [...]

Martha Nussbaum: Objectification, Sexualisation And Conservative Hypocrisy

Okay, time for some theory... This is a companion piece to Intentional and Interpretive Sexualisation. Martha Nussbaum is a noted American philosopher. The fact that she specialises in Greek and Roman philosophy is enough to impress me. Whilst she has written on a wide range of topics this article will focus on her critically important theoretical contribution to the issue of objectification. In particular I want to focus on her seven conditions of objectification as defined in her essay Objectification. 1. Instrumentality: The objectifier treats the object as a tool of his or her purposes.2. Denial of autonomy: The objectifier [...]

The Naked Child In Art: Jock Sturges Update

Just stumbled across this. Whilst Australia goes into a flurry of moral panic over the work of Bill Henson, photographer Jock Sturges goes from strength to strength. Now he has published a large, limited edition portfolio called Mit Jock Sturges Familär. The basic edition costs USD 990, the deluxe with stand, USD 6050. This is for serious collectors but also indicates Sturges's popularity. Very few photographers can expect to produce this type of portfolio. The model in the photo is Eva, who has been working with Sturges since she was around 10 (see photos below) and continues to work with [...]

Sexual Shame (2)

I wanted to treat this example of sexual shaming as a separate entry... Below are two photos; the original and an altered version. The original photograph is by Jock Sturges. It was photographed at the naturist resort at Montalivet in France in 1989. It is of a girl and her mother. There are other photos by Sturges of the girl (Arianne) taken over many summers (circa 1988 to present - see photo below, taken 10 years later). The photo was published in his monograph Radiant Identities. It needs to be stated quite clearly that both the mother and daughter consented [...]

Abigail Bray (3): Silencing The Subject

Censor the body and you censor breath and speech at the same time. Write yourself. Your body must be heard. Hélène Cixous For a feminist this is the worst betrayal of all. Feminism is supposed to empower women and girls. Yet in adopting the paedophiliac gaze she does what all paedophiles do: silences the subject. In the previous post I asked if Abigail had spoken to Henson. More importantly. Has she spoken to the model in the photograph? What does the model think of Abigail's interpretation? In the US trial of British artist Graham Ovenden one of his model's defended [...]

The Naked Child In Art: The Line Of Beauty And Grace

In my previous entry I talked about Bravehearts' extreme position regarding the naked child in art. Despite the naked child as subject being as old as art itself and appearing in a number of major works, Bravehearts would seek to outlaw all such images. I also said that this position was based on ignorance and arrogance. It stems from a profoundly mistaken view that all such images are inherently exploitative. I have challenged this view in several entries of this blog. What Bravehearts and other self-appointed child protection groups (however well meaning) often fail to do is listen to the [...]

Camera Obscura, A Film By Kai Beverly-Whittemore

In one of my early posts I mentioned the sisters, Miranda and Kai Beverly-Wittemore. I mentioned that Kai was directing a short film based on Miranda's first novel, The Effects of Light. Well, seems it has been completed and is called Camera Obscura. You can watch the trailer at the film's website Camera Obscura. It looks like Kai has done a wonderful job and it has been beautifully shot by Christina Voros. The film explores the issue of the naked child in art from the subject's perspective. Both Miranda and Kai have been posing for Jock Sturges since they were [...]
